-What is open adoption?
In an open adoption the birth mother picks the family her child will be raised by and often forms a friendship with them that lasts throughout the child's life. Identifying information is shared between the birth mother and the adoptive family. There is ongoing direct contact between the birth mother, the child, and the adoptive family. In many cases the birth mother spends the child's birthdays or holidays with the family and maintains regular contact with the child. The birth mother is apart of the child's life. Every open adoption looks different and a plan is made up through an Open Adoption Agreement.
In the majority of open adoptions birth mothers and the adoptive families work together, often have a close relationship, and follow the Option Adoption Agreement easily.
Q: Can my child's adoptive family take away my right to see and communicate with my child as stated in the Open Adoption Agreement?
A: No. In the state of Minnesota Open Adoption Agreements are enforceable by the law as long as the court sees that it is in the best interest of the child. Meaning that as long as you as the birth mother is not posing a risk to your child (for example: showing up to visits with your child under the influence of drugs) the state will support and enforce your rights in the Open Adoption Agreement.
***We NEVER want a woman to pick adoption when she truly does want to parent her child but feels she cannot due to finances, social support, or some other type of barrier. If a woman truly wants to parent their child but are facing barriers we want to come along side her and help her knock those barriers down so she can parent.

If your facing an unplanned pregnancy, you do not want to parent your child, and you do not want to have an ongoing relationship with your child a semi-open adoption is a good choice.
- What is a semi-open adoption?
The biggest difference between an open and semi-open adoption is that in a semi-open adoption the birth mother typically does not meet the adoptive family and if any communication occurs between the birth mother and adoptive family is handled by a third party (the adoption agency).
So you maybe thinking then why not just have a closed adoption and that is because there are key differences between a semi-open and closed adoption.
In a semi-open adoption the mother can allow a third party to share some family medical history with the adoptive family. This can allow for proper medical care for your child as they grow. For example, this can ensure the child receives the correct cancer screening tests at the correct age if that child knows a certain type cancer was very common and diagnosed at a young age members of their biological family.
